White Neon Records Evidence
Within this section of the e-portfolio I will discuss an event where I was part of a management team. The event was a launch night for White Neon Records, a newly established independent record label, run by students based at Perth UHI. The company aim is to build and showcase a professional reputation for new artists throughout Scotland, who are working towards a career within the music industry.
White Neon Records have eight employees, specialising in managing different genres of music. Five employees are supporting the acoustic genre whilst the other three employees are focusing on indie rock genre. White Neon Records encourage new music of all genres and we are extremely thrilled to be supporting new and emerging talent from Scotland. The label aims to promote, market and advertise all our artists and the label itself to the very best of our availability. Over the last year White Neon Records played host to three events:
· White Neon Records Launch Night
· Eilidth McGuire’s EP Launch
· Radio Arcade’s EP Launch
I will focus on my part played within the first event, The Launch Night. My role of the evening was to manage the event & acts throughout the night, making sure that they were present on stage at the appropriate time. Everything went smoothly to begin with until one of the bands had called to say that they would be late. Due to this we had to move the whole running schedule forward, this meant that Eilidth McGuire had to be perform 20 minutes earlier than scheduled, once I had explained the slight set back to Eilidth who understood and said that she would play an extra 3 songs to pass the time until the other band arrived. This worked out great as during Eilidth's set I had a phone call from the band to say that they were just parking, and once they arrived in the venue, I took them into the green room where I explained that they would have to shorten their performance due to the time-scale being moved around and to also keep within the time frame of the venues licence. The band weren't very happy that they were playing a shorter set and threatened to walk out, however I managed to calm them down and offered them a support set at the next event, they ended up being happy enough with that offer.
I felt very much in control and I think I managed the situation in the best way I could at the time. I feel as though the event was a huge success, the venue was full and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.
I feel that my theory in managing this situation would be most relevant to Fayol's theory, as the areas of management that was focused on was;

- Authority – Managers must have the authority to give orders, but they must also keep in mind that with authority comes responsibility.
- Discipline – Discipline must be upheld in organizations, but methods for doing so can vary.
- Unity of Command – Employees should have only one direct supervisor.
- Unity of Direction – Teams with the same objective should be working under the direction of one manager, using one plan. This will ensure that action is properly coordinated.
